A Father's Day Tribute

My father moved to the U.S. in the early 80's to pursue his masters in computer science at UCSB. Fresh out of the Taiwanese army and equipped with little more than the clothing on his back and a few dollars in his pocket, he travelled nearly 7,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean to the United States.

And in the 20 something years that he's lived here, he has accomplished quite a lot.

His intelligence, emotional strength, and natural talent made it possible for him and my mom to build a new and better life in California. What is most incredible to me is how he was able to navigate through all the hardships and obstacles that most foreigners are burdened by. He not only completed his degree and acquired a job right after graduate school, but also successfully partnered with my mom to open up a flower shop, City of Flowers, in 1992 (my mom, the head owner and designer, has kept it alive and running since then) My dad even has lots of equity and investments (which is a geeky thing to note but I think it's really impressive). English was his second language and America his second home; but neither of these deterred him from absolutely killing it here.

Now forget these material accomplishments. What is my dad really like?

He's curious and adventurous. He was the one who introduced me to camping in Yosemite, cherry picking in Brentwood, skiing in Lake Tahoe, etc. He loves trying new things from biking, to golfing, to wind surfing, to baking his own bread, to playing the chinese violin. He's comical. He's generous. He's practical. He's the world's best dad.

There are so many things about my dad that makes him inspiring to me. Whenever I find myself in a tough spot or feel discouraged, I just think about my dad and how hard he had to work to get where he is today. My dad deserves all of the best things the world has to offer, and I hope that one day, I can take as good of care of him as he has of me.

I love you dad!!
